Marquesas Islands from Nuku Hiva - ID 539

Day 1: Check-in

Embarkation in the afternoon in Taioh'ae, the capital of the archipelago, which opens out into a large bay with a small harbour and jetty. The bay is located south of the island of Nuku Hiva and is the perfect starting point for a cruise to discover the beautiful and unspoilt Marquesas Islands.

Day 2

We finally set the sails and begin the anti-clockwise navigation of the island of Nuku Hiva! The first stop will be nearby Controller Bay and the small village of Taipivai, which became world-famous thanks to the stories of Herman Melville, who lived here. The village is surrounded by vanilla plantations and a dense forest in the background. Sailing northwards, we then encounter two more beautiful bays: Haatuatua and, after Punta Matauaoa, Haataivea Bay.

Day 3

Still north of the island of Nuku Hiva, we sail west to discover the most beautiful northern bays. Baie d'Anaho is the first one we encounter: here you can go ashore to enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach, the only one on the Marquesas Islands with a coral reef. Here you will also find a small restaurant and where you can buy fresh fruit, especially delicious grapefruits grown by the villagers.

Day 4

From the spectacular Anhao Bay, we move on to the nearby Hatiheu Bay, home to the village of the same name. On land, in the vicinity of the small town, it is also possible to visit the archaeological site 'Tahakia Kamuihei Teiipoka': a magnificent temple (marae) in the middle of the forest, not to be missed! Hatiheu is also an excellent starting point for hiking and horse riding.

Day 5

We leave the village of Hatiheu to sail to the north-western part of Nuku Hiva. A beautiful bay in which to stop is Pua Bay. Alternatively, it is possible to continue sailing to the western side to anchor at Haahopu Bay, also known as Airport Bay, due to its proximity to the island's only airport. Here, rocky inlets protect the beach from the waves, making the waters inside perfectly calm.

Day 6

And finally, back south, we sail to the beautiful Taioa Bay, with two bays. Splendid is the one overlooked by the village of Hakatea (Hakaui) with its valley and waterfalls in the background. From here it is possible to hike along beautiful trails in the midst of nature to the highest waterfalls in French Polynesia, the Vaipo Falls.

Day 7: Check-out

The tour finishes by returning to Taiohae. For those who wish to sail for a few hours on the open sea, one can reach further south the beautiful and small island of Ua Pou, with Hakahetau Bay, with a typical small restaurant and a walk to the small waterfall. Alternatively, further east in Hakahau Bay is the main village with a craft centre and a small market. On request, it is also possible to extend the duration of the cruise (up to 12 days) to explore the other islands of the archipelago.

The itinerary may be subject to variations based on weather conditions, safety conditions and the technical assessments of the captain of the boat. This program is intended as indicative and not binding.
