The Adriatic Sea, located between the Italian peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula, overlooks six countries: Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania: it includes many islands especially in the Balkan territory. Among the Italian islands can be explored the Tremiti islands from the calcareous soils, the island of Pianosa in the province of Foggia, and other minor islands near the Gargano promontory even if the most famous ones are found in Croatia. Its sea beds, mostly sandy and slightly sloping, are characterized by animals and plants typical of this environment, such as clams, while the fish fauna is represented by species such as sole or tracina. Very interesting features can be found in the lagoons and in the shores, which represent an important ecosystem of transition between the mainland and the sea.
