RJ Portman
Captain

Born in: 1977
Nation: USA
Speaking Languages: English

Jenna Taylor
Chef/Mate

Born in: 1986
Nation: USA

This fun sailing duo has been on the Caribbean blue together for nearly 5 years! As adventurers, delivery
crew, private charter crew and as sailing instructors; RJ and Jenna have always found a way to sail
together.

Captain RJ, originally from Alaska, began sailing many years ago in the Puget Sound, surrounded by
mountains and the beautiful city of Seattle. Longing for warmer wind and water (as many of us do), RJ
decided to sell his businesses, officially downsize his life and move to St. Thomas to become a sailboat
captain. And that is exactly what he did. Not long after moving to the USVI, RJ found himself the cocaptain of a fun little day charter boat named, Rumbaba. Though she was a simple little 39ft Hunter
monohull; Rumbaba was a blast to take guests out on. Incredible scenery, snorkeling with turtles,
delicious grilled lunch entrees and all the fresh cocktails you could handle made each outing something
special for every guest. Making the top 10 of all activities to do on St. Thomas and Trip Advisor verified
that!

First Mate Jenna grew up on Newman Lake, Washington; a beautiful little lakeside community outside of
Spokane. Her love for boating began from a very young age; sitting on her Dad’s lap and racing the
speed boat from shore to shore. Jenna’s eventual move to Seattle only gave her more access to playing
on sailboats on the Puget Sound. Loving the city, but needing escape, boat camping, or as Jenna would
say, “Bamping”, around the many islands and bays of the sound became a frequent weekend event. She
could also always be found as steady and faithful crew for the infamous Duck Dodge races of South Lake
Union!

The wind and the sea continued to call on RJ too, and he found himself as crew on some pretty slick
racing sailboats. Again however, the warmer wind and waters of the Caribbean continued to call; this
time, literally...

RJ’s original sailing instructor, from many years earlier in Seattle, was on the other end of that phone
call. He had established a sailing school in Grenada and, through social media, had seen that RJ was back
in the Puget Sound sailing.

“Have you ever thought about teaching sailing?” he said through the phone. “I think you’d be great at
it.” He added.

RJ laughed at first, “Man, I’m still out here learning to sail!”

His response was all RJ needed to hear: “RJ, there is no better way to learn than to teach.”
And with that, the next chapter of sailing began. RJ diligently acquired all the proper certifications
through the US Coast Guard and the American Sailing Association and began to teach sailing at Seattle
Sailing Club. What a blast! RJ absolutely found a calling. This is also when he met his beautiful wife,
Jenna. She was a lighthearted beer can racing sailor when they met and she was fascinated with his
plans to live a Caribbean sailing life. He was going and he hoped she would visit, often.

After about 6 months from that first important phone call, RJ moved himself to Grenada. Sight unseen
prior to arrival, he immediately fell in love with Grenada and The Grenadines. How can you not? They
are the friendliest people in the Caribbean; hands down. And beauty was everywhere! What a place.
“Work” was teaching term charter sailing and exploring all the amazing little spots along the way. Oh
what fun this job is! Teaching people who are so excited and switched on to learn how to captain a boat
for themselves. Many students planned to charter boats with their family and friends, some just wanted
to see what it was all about by testing their will (and stomachs) and still others came to learn how to sail
off into retirement, literally.

Jenna continued to join the Grenada adventure. At first as an ASA student herself. She kept coming back
to join RJ on more adventures and for more sailing. Their combined passion for sailing has only been
surpassed by their love for each other. The more they sailed, the more obvious it became that this was
to be their wonderful and adventure filled life together. Teaching became a calling for them both and
they began to charter private couple’s cruising instruction. Does it get any better than that?! Working
with your love and teaching other couples with similar dreams to yours how to make it into a reality! It
has been truly amazing. Just ask them and you will get the fully animated version... they don’t tell short
stories... Haha, what fun would that be?!

5 years later; RJ married the beautiful Jenna. They’ve sailed over 20,000 nautical miles together. Over
300 ASA students graduated. 2 Outstanding ASA Instructor of the Year awards. 100’s of new friends and
lifetimes of memories. Life has been good to say the least.

It’s not always sailing for these two... whenever possible, Jenna and RJ enjoy scuba diving, kiteboarding,
hiking and traveling together. Stateside, RJ laces up the skates whenever he can smell an ice rink and
Jenna gets all giddy when she can strap on the crampons and climb to the tallest mountain. Family and
friends are always in the mix everywhere they go.

So now it is time to make some more new friends and show you all the beauty that the Virgin Islands
have to offer.

Location Details: *** DELANA MAE WILL BE AVAILBLE UPON REQUEST IN JUNE & JULY OF 2026 IN GRENADA, ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES ***

St. Vincent to Grenada 2024/2025 Sample Itinerary
(a brief rundown of the itinerary we recommend and are most likely to follow if all conditions allow):

Guests fly into St. Vincent, Argyle International Airport (SVD), suggested 1+ days before charter start. Same day is possible for a sleep aboard. Onboarding is preferred to take place on the island of Bequia. Bequia is about a 60min ferry ride from the southern port of Kingstown on mainland St. Vincent. Depending upon how well the airline arrival lines up, it would be best to ferry to Bequia and either plan a sleep aboard Delana Mae or organize to stay at The Plantation hotel (our recommended hotel). There are several other AirBnB type accommodations available as well you can find on the internet. If the flights do not line up easily for the ferry the day of arrival, I would recommend rooms at Blue Lagoon Marina on the southern coast of mainland St. Vincent. From there the ferry can be taken in the morning From Kingstown to Bequia to meet and onboard Delana Mae. From there we start our adventures south! We have 7 nights to choose anchorages including the final night aboard in Grenada.

1. Bequia. One night in Bequia is great whether it be in a hotel or sleep aboard. Any extra time in Bequia is fun and allows us to explore the cute town, unique hand made model boat museum and even the turtle rescue sanctuary, Old Hague.
2. Lunch on the island of Canoaun at Sandy Lane Yacht Club. Quite possibly the nicest marina in all of the Caribbean… and we love to do a “boujee” lunch ashore here. It’s not pricey, but it is very beautiful and delicious.
Overnight in Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau. THIS is Jenna and I’s favorite beach on the planet. It will also be the location of our wedding in August 2025! There is so much to see on this quaint little island (lobster beach BBQ’s and/or rum punches at Last Bar Before The Jungle, a tiny little Catholic Church with the biggest Caribbean view, and the nicest rasta you’ll ever meet, Robert Righteous).
3. The Tobago Cays. Of our favorite places in the Grenadines, if the coin had Mayreau on one side… this would be on the other side! 5 uninhabited islands, 1 sea turtle sanctuary to snorkel, short little hikes with iguanas and tortoises and an incredible beach BBQ right on the sandy shore. Oh, and “why is the rum gone?” Petit Tabac is the island they filmed that famous scene from Pirates Of the Caribbean on!
4. Union Island, Clifton Harbor. Fancy taking a kiteboarding lesson?! This is the spot. Or, if watching the pros on display is better, then we grab a seat on Happy Island and sip rum punches on the manmade island, built from conch shells and sack concrete… an amazing place in the world to be for sundowners.
5. Union island, Chatham Bay. If you love the remoteness of the southern Caribbean, then this is another wonderful and beautiful bay to enjoy. Perfect for our eFoil board and all the snorkeling you can handle. Maybe we’ll have a little bonfire on the beach and there is always the option for more lobster beach BBQ!
6. Carriacou, Anse La Roche, Grenada. Paradise perfected. If we only do one beach BBQ dinner ashore, this is the one. Our good friend Tim puts on the best and most beautiful, rustic beach dinner spread you can imagine, after a snorkel around the pristine Sandy Cay of course.
7. St. George’s, Grenada. We’ve made it to the other beautiful end, time to celebrate! We can stay anchored out or pull in and have ourselves a docktail party at our final destination of Port Louis Marina. :)
After that last night of charter, you could add a sleep aboard night or if you want to stay on the beach at one of the many nice hotels Grenada has to offer on Grand Anse Beach, then we can arrange some island exploring (Volcano lake Grand Etang, mona monkeys, waterfalls, chocolate and rum factories too). We totally understand if you have to get on that plane ASAP… but we already know you won’t want to!
We can even get to Grenada a night sooner if you want to be sure to make an island tour happen before you fly out. There are lots of easy options to swap around when you are here.

Questions & Answers

How does the charter contract work?

The contract is signed directly between the Owner and the Charterer, with the support of the broker. It is usually based on the international MYBA contract model, designed to ensure clear and balanced protection for both parties.
There is also the figure of the Stakeholder, responsible for safely holding the funds until the end of the charter.

What is included in the charter fee?

The base rate includes the rental of the yacht, the use of all onboard equipment, the presence of the crew, and the related insurance coverage.
Operational expenses such as fuel, provisioning, marina fees, beverages, and additional activities are not included and are managed through the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance).

The exact list of what is included or excluded will be confirmed when selecting the yacht.

What is the APA and how does it work?

The APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is an advance fund, usually equal to 25–35% of the charter fee, allocated to cover operational expenses such as fuel, provisioning, marina fees, paid activities, beverages, and the guests’ personalized requests.

At the end of the cruise, the Captain provides a detailed breakdown of all expenditures. Any unused amount is refunded to the client, while any overages are settled directly upon closing the charter.

What are the payment terms?

Upon signing the contract, a payment of 50% of the total amount is required.
The balance — including APA, taxes, and any additional charges — is typically due around five weeks before embarkation (depending on the owner).
Payments are made via bank transfer, which is the standard method in the luxury charter industry.

Can I cancel a booking?

Yes, cancellations are possible, but the contractual terms apply.
In general, if the client decides to withdraw, the Owner retains the deposits already paid.

If the yacht is rebooked for the same period, the Owner refunds the amount recovered, minus the applicable commissions.

Every cancellation request is handled with full transparency.
Further details on the applicable policies are available upon direct request.

How can I choose the yacht that best suits my needs?

The choice depends primarily on the type of experience you wish to enjoy:

  • Motor yacht for maximum comfort, excellent stability, and fast transfers.

  • Sailing yacht for an authentic, quiet experience rooted in traditional navigation.

  • Catamaran for generous spaces, superior stability, and enhanced privacy.

BeBlue evaluates the destination, number of guests, personal preferences, and budget to select the most suitable option for you.

How far in advance should I book?

For peak season (Mediterranean: June–September; Caribbean: December–April), it is advisable to book several months in advance to secure the best available options.
We can also handle last-minute requests, depending on availability and licensing requirements.

Is it possible to personalise menus, preferences, and activities?

Absolutely. Before departure, you will receive a Preference Sheet where you can indicate your tastes, dietary needs, allergies, beverage preferences, and the activities you wish to enjoy.
The Chef and the Captain will use this information to create a fully customised experience for you.

How many guests can be accommodated on board?

Most yachts can host 6 to 12 guests, depending on their interior layout.
Some superyachts over 80 metres, compliant with international certifications, can accommodate up to 36 guests.

Will I have Internet access during the charter?

Most yachts offer Wi-Fi on board, provided through mobile networks or satellite systems. The quality and speed of the connection may vary depending on the cruising area and the technology installed.

Is tipping the crew expected?

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is a well-established custom to show appreciation for the crew’s service.
International guidelines suggest an amount equal to 10–15% of the base charter fee as a reference.

Why rely on BeBlue?
