The IY 9.98 is a fast and safe boat, capable of winning two consecutive ORC world championships. The two configurations differ in certain details that make the Fuoriserie version more suitable for typical racing use and the Bellissima version dedicated to fast cruising.

The hull of the Italia Yachts 9.98 in the Fuoriserie version is the result of numerous statistical analyses and fluid dynamics cross-referenced with performance prediction programmes. The special geometry obtained allows for very thin water lines and taut exits when the boat is upright, to the advantage of load-bearing sailing, while as heel increases the lines widen to guarantee greater stability of form while remaining symmetrical. These studies, together with experience on race courses, have made it possible to achieve an excellent compromise between performance and ease of handling.
